issue #6: filf season is upon us
Some words on this year's People's Sexiest Man and some other debut fathers.
Hi everyone,
I took a two-week break to sort out some life issues but I’m back with a bumper issue.
It’s the most wonderful time of the year…when People Magazine announces who is their Sexiest Man of the Year. The choice is always random AF, always feels a little outdated, but is still a fun little discourse subject to talk about.
This year’s sexiest man is none other than Patrick Dempsey. Now, Dempsey has always been an extremely attractive men and many (me) would argue that he has just gotten better-looking with age.
See exhibit A:
However, when we look back at 2023 we are not going to think ‘Ah, the year of Patrick Dempsey…’ Perhaps 2003 yes, when everyone and their mother was swooning over him seducing Meredith Grey in Grey’s Anatomy or in 2007 when he was a hot single dad in Enchanted but now?
Dempsey is starring in two films this year, Michael Mann’s Ferrari which stars Adam Driver as Enzo Ferrari, and Eli Roth’s horror Thanksgiving. Both are set to be released soon.
Many people on social media are shouting out other names of stars that are more appropriately the sexiest men of 2023 like Pedro Pascal. BUT as I have understood this mantle over the years, it doesn’t seem like they necessarily give it to the appropriate man. I think it’s a whole collaboration between the star and the magazine, the star has to agree to the title, do a photo shoot etc. Perhaps Pedro Pascal said ‘not yet’, perhaps they already had a deal with the Dempsey people but it seems a bit more intricate than just picking the hottest man of the year.
In his interview, he said to People:
“I’m glad it’s happening at this point in my life. It’s nice to have the recognition, and certainly my ego takes a little bump, but it gives me the platform to use it for something positive.”
He is using the platform to garner support for his organisation, the Dempsey Centre, “which he founded in honor of his late mom to support cancer patients and their loved ones.”
He also admits in the interview that his heyday was long time ago, but he’s still working and doing the things so something must have gone right. It might be 20 years too late, but I can’t be mad, Dempsey is still one of the sexiest actors on the scene, he didn’t get his accolade when he should’ve and he honestly seems like a nice bloke.
Talking about fathers, TWO of my celeb crushes are (maybe) going to be fathers:
Number 1 is Robert Pattinson. The paps snapped some pics of him and his gf actor/singer Suki Waterhouse walking in LA and it looks like Suki has a visible baby bump. The couple have not confirmed the rumours yet, so we’ll wait for them to make it official.
The second is my champion, Springbok rugby player Handre Pollard who announced that he and his beautiful wife Marise are expecting their first child.
Can’t wait to welcome to these two dads to the ranks!
xoxo

Film: They Cloned Tyrone
One of the most inventive and interesting films I watched this year. It’s a science fiction film about a series of incidents which leads to a drug dealer, a prostitute and a pimp investigating a government conspiracy. If you are a fan of social commentary absurdist comedies like Get Out and Sorry To Bother You, this is a must-watch. It is available to watch on Netflix.
Documentary: Sidney
A legend, Sidney Poitier was a trendsetter in cinema. He was the first black actor to win the Best Actor Academy Award and the work he did both in front of the camera and behind the scenes were tremendous. This documentary follows his journey from the Bahamas to Hollywood and how his influence is still felt today. It is available to watch on Apple TV+.
