a list of actors who annoy me so much that it's hard to watch their movies
yes, bradley cooper is on the list
Hi guys
This week when I was discussing some of my favourite Christmas movies, I realised that there quite a few actors that annoy me so much that I struggle to watch movies with them in. I mean, I will probably still try, but it won’t be an absolute good time. This list isn’t about the abusers or bad people, this is mostly normal, ordinary folk who just annoy me because of shallow reasons, or they played an unforgivable role that one time.
Owen Wilson - Maybe it’s the voice or the fact that his character was a TERRIBLE friend in Wedding Crashers and they made him out to be the hero of the movie. I always thought Luke was the cuter Wilson brother, but when watching the Loki trailer, I did think that maaaaybe older Owen has something going for him.
Cameron Diaz - I’m sorry for this one. She honestly seems like a lovely person in real life. But I don’t know why in recent years, she has been annoying me in movies. I was violently angered by her character in In Her Shoes, and I skip the scenes with her in The Holiday. But I’m rooting for her and Benji and their fam in real life.
Diane Keaton - This is one that I’ve realised recently but I think has always been there, she’s just been hidden in great ensemble casts. When I think of some of my favourite movies like The First Wives Club to The Godfather, I rarely think of Diane Keaton. But last year when I watched Book Club and watched her hook up with the love of my life, Andy Garcia, I had enough. From Because I Said So to Manhattan to Something’s Gotta Give her brand of ditzy and whiny is particularly annoying to me.
Malin Ackerman - I think this one is entirely because of her role in 27 Dresses. She also has a bit of an angry face, I think she scares me a little. But I watched her on Match Game this week and she seemed lovely. Maybe it just shows what a good actress she is.
Bradley Cooper - I will not apologise for this. Another casualty from my repeat watching of Wedding Crashers is Bradley Cooper. He just has a very douchey face, and every character he plays I get extremely angry with. Yes, including that selfish, red-faced fool in A Star is Born.
Emily VanCamp - Okay so this is like 90% of my Twitter personality. Thee origins of my EVC annoyance I usually trace back to Everwood and how much Amy was the absolute worst. Then I could not stand her on Brothers & Sisters, I loved that show until Rebecca showed up. I didn’t bother with Revenge and The Resident. And I was MAD that they cast her as the niece of my darling Peggy Carter in the Captain America movies. BUT I will say that I am self-aware enough to note the fact that she did date (1) Joseph Morgan who for a couple of years I was in love with so maybe it’s a jealousy thing too. But still. Nee.
What celebs annoy you so much that you struggle to watch projects that they are in?
other things that are on my mind this week:
Series: The Undoing - I loved the series The Undoing which is currently on M-Net and Showmax. It stars Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant and is about a family whose lives are turned upside down after a woman they know is murdered. It’s a mystery, it’s a thriller, it’s so well-acted, and it is written by David E. Kelley. An excellent recipe for a juicy miniseries. You can read my review for Channel24 here.
Series: P-Valley - Another amazing series is P-Valley. Written and created by renowned playwright Katori Hall, and directed by an all-female team, it is a stunning exploration of a strip club in a small Southern town and how that intersects with the politics, economics and religion of the town. It is currently on 1Magic and Showmax. You can read my review for Channel24 here.
Documentary: Skeef - An excellent documentary about the intricacies of growing up LGBTQI+ in South Africa. Created by presenter Renaldo Schwarp, he interviews various people around the country about their experiences and touches on the media’s response and queer representation in film and TV in SA. It is extremely interesting and definitely worth a watch. You can watch it on Showmax here.
Special: Euphoria Special 1: Rue - If you are a fan of Euphoria this is a must-watch. A departure from the flashy show, this special filmed during the pandemic, stars just Rue and Ali as they talk in a diner about addiction, faith and finding hope in the darkness. It is stunning and so enthralling and made me cry far too many times for my liking. You can watch it on Showmax, and read my review for Channel24 here.
what’s ign crushing on:
We had a very special episode with the stars of the new Netflix film, Riding With Sugar - Hakeem Kae-Kazim and Charles Mnene talking about the film, the experiences in South Africa, and the immigrant experience. Check it out here.
This week’s guest was Tecla Ciolfi editor and founder of music website Texx and the City, and the host of the podcast, Texx Talks. We chatted about that time she auditioned for Idols, what she thinks of this year’s Grammy nominees, the DJ Lag situation and her top 5 albums ever. It was such a lovely and informative chat. Check it out here.
